Although not completely independent, I love Global (formerly Ryans) Pet Foods, they only stock higher quality foods and rather than the typical staff in some of the chain stores, their staff are always happy to answer questions and take you through the store to help you find the perfect food for your animal.
Part of my love of Global is that their local store carries both the food and litter that my guys use so I dont have to drive all over the place looking for them, plus they are huge supporters of our local shelter.
While Global stores are individual in the brands they carry, many are very selective while others have more of a selection and others have more unknown brands and carry raw foods and alternative supplements, so it can take some time until you find the franchise that suits you. However, my local store have always been happy to order in items I have asked them about and always have samples of new items to try.
MyPetBoutique is based in Toronto and sell many stylish products for your pets including giftbaskets and sets for Christmas.
The ‘Walk About Town’ set features a matching collar and leash, a toy and cookies for that perfect day out with your pooch and the ‘Treat Me Right’ basket will leave you wishing that you are a dog (or at least your dog).
For those who know someone adopting a pet this year, they have a New Arrival pack, including a journal and helpful hints for new pet owners, a pewter bone shaped photo frame to remember those puppy dog / shelter dog eyes the day you brought them home and some toys for the new dog too.
Their cat products are very similar, featuring homemade treat baskets for those who prefer to make their own, or gourmet treat baskets for those who prefer ready made. They also have many gifts for the cat lover, and even a special gift set for your cat-sitter!
But my favourite has to be the food bowls that have been created with the pet in mind, the Meow Dish allows for stress free dining with their whiskers never touching the sites of the bowl and it is elevated to help with those cats who can not eat quick enough and the Pooch Bowl, which comes in Big Pooch and Lil’ Pup sizes

While the name made me a little wary at first (one of those, is it real or not moments), PetMens.ca is a great resource for all your pet supplies, stocking Da Bird and the CatSitter DVD to a dog bowl that chatters away to your pet while you are out to make them feel less stressed. Its best feature, however, is that they stock refills for many of the toys that it is near impossible to buy refills for in Canada, saving potential duty costs when having them shipped from the US.
They do not have the best selection, but all of the products are tried and tested favourites and its great to have a nearby supplie, and if you dont want to buy online, call to order by phone or they will tell you which stores near you stock their products!
